StartBox Quick Start Guide / Day of Surgery

There are three main tasks to perform using StartBox on the day of surgery: 

(A) Preop Check In; 
(B) Handoff to OR (Confirm Patient); 
(C) Start Surgery (Record Time Out).

Video tutorials for the focused steps below are available online following the links in parentheses. 

A. Preop Check In (Training 4.2):
This can be done by Preop Nurse, Surgeon or NP/PA

  1. FIND patient/procedure on “Patients” tab
  2. Verify that all scheduling fields are complete: description, date of surgery, location
  3. LISTEN to “Decision for surgery” recording
  4. Press GO
  5. PAIR patient armband barcode
  6. PAIR StartBox Kit (laterality card)
  7. Done!

B. Handoff to OR (Training 5.1):
This can be done by the Circulator, Surgeon or NP/PA

  1. FIND patient/procedure on “Patients” tab
  2. LISTEN to “Decision for surgery” recording
  3. Press GO
  4. CONFIRM Armband & Kit (scan armband first, then laterality card)
  5. Done!

C. Start Surgery (Training 5.2):
This can be done by Circulator, Surgeon or NP/PA

  1. FIND patient/procedure on “Patients” tab
  2. Press “RECORD Time Out
  3. LISTEN to “Decision for surgery” recording (last time)
  4. Press GO
  5. Press RECORD button; conduct Time Out; stop recording when time out is completed
  6. CLOSE procedure
  7. Done!
